TalkBack was a platform designed to deepen connections between fans and creators, described by its founder as “a better Cameo.” Through TalkBack, fans could pay to have their content reviewed by artists, musicians, and experts, receiving tailored feedback in return. With innovative roots and high hopes, the company started strong. However, after three and a half years, it became evident that while creators loved the platform, scaling engagement with fans proved challenging.
Founder Justin and his team faced a hard truth: despite a passionate fan base, the fan-to-creator engagement on TalkBack didn’t reach the levels needed to sustain growth. “We realized that our learning was limited because we didn’t have creators willing to continually experiment with their audiences,” Justin said. Faced with a limited runway and a string of pivots, Justin made the tough call to shut down, prioritizing a structured exit to preserve relationships with investors.
Introduced to Sunset through an investor, Justin was immediately impressed by the transparent, fixed-cost model and personal touch. “The fixed pricing was huge. Unlike working with high-cost law firms, Sunset offered a clear understanding of costs and timelines, which let me focus on winding down while staying solvent,” he explained.
Additionally, Sunset’s empathetic approach was a significant factor in Justin’s decision.
“It’s a tough process, and Brendan’s guidance made me feel understood. I felt they’d treat both us and our investors with respect, not just rush through it,” he shared.
Sunset’s method was straightforward yet responsive, combining efficient tools with personal support. “Sunset’s team walked me through every stage, breaking down what initially felt like a complex maze,” Justin remarked. “Their slide deck clarified that it was doable, and their step-by-step guidance gave me confidence that we could wrap up within the year.”
Along the way, small but critical details surfaced, like managing minor vendor contracts and incidental expenses. Sunset’s guidance on handling these last-minute surprises made all the difference. “They were my single point of contact, handling everything from dissolving our bank accounts to addressing lingering software subscriptions,” Justin noted.
Today, Justin feels the lightness of a new beginning. “For the first time in years, I don’t feel guilty focusing on my next project,” he said. With support from investors and clear closure of outstanding obligations, Justin can fully shift his energy to his future ventures.
Reflecting on his experience, Justin shared:
“Sunset didn’t just handle the logistics—they helped me transition emotionally, too. If you’re ready to move on and need a trusted partner to clear the path, Sunset is the way to go.”
He’s already recommended Sunset to other founders who might find themselves at a similar juncture.
Asked to sum up his experience, Justin simply said:
“Sunset gave me the freedom to get excited about what’s next.”
